Features:
- Executes fail-safe and standard control programs within one SIMATIC S7-400 CPU.
- Divides 16 MB of work memory equally between code and data areas.
- Provides MPI/DP, Industrial Ethernet/PROFINET, and an IFM expansion position.
The safety and standard program sections share one processing platform while remaining distinct parts of the configured control project.
X1 carries MPI or PROFIBUS DP traffic, X5 provides the Ethernet and PROFINET path, and IF1 accepts the additional PROFIBUS interface module.
A flash memory card holds the complete safety program, and the CPU does not provide a hot-restart operating mode.
The Siemens 6ES7416-3FS06-0AB0 CPU 416F-3 PN/DP Fail-Safe Central Processing Unit may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

How fail-safe execution is organized
- Runtime Groups: The F-program is organized into safety runtime groups that execute alongside the standard program.
- Flash Storage: The complete safety program, including F-blocks, is stored on a flash memory card.
- Memory Boundary: Additional F-blocks cannot be loaded later only into RAM load memory.
- Restart Behavior: Hot restart is unavailable, so the configured safety startup sequence applies after a stop.
Distinct communication routes
- X1 Route: The first interface operates as MPI or PROFIBUS DP at up to 12 Mbit/s.
- X5 Route: The Ethernet interface carries PROFINET communication and online access.
- IF1 Route: An IF 964-DP module adds a separate PROFIBUS DP connection at the expansion position.
- Traffic Separation: The three paths let engineering, Ethernet, and additional fieldbus traffic use dedicated interfaces.
Memory and restart boundaries
- Complete Image: The safety program is transferred as a complete image to the flash memory card.
- F-Block Loading: Later loading of only new F-blocks into RAM load memory is not supported.
- Cold Startup: The CPU starts through the configured startup process rather than a hot restart.
- Consistency Check: Safety-program consistency is evaluated as part of the F-system startup and operation.
Officially defined control tasks
- Personal Safety: The fail-safe program can execute protective functions intended for personnel safety.
- Machine Safety: Safety logic can supervise machine-related protective functions within the configured F-system.
- Burner Control: Burner-control safety tasks are included among the documented uses of this CPU.
- Standard Automation: Standard control logic can run in the same CPU beside the fail-safe program.
