Features:
- Full hardware redundancy for maximum uptime
- Dual 24V DC power inputs with fault tolerance
- Engineered for extreme and hazardous environments
The ABB TU860 features two independent mounting slots for CI845 FCI modules and two for Ethernet adapters, allowing you to configure fully redundant communication paths. If the primary module or adapter fails, the secondary unit takes over seamlessly without process interruption, making it ideal for continuous production lines and critical infrastructure.
Equipped with two separate connectors for 24V power supplies, the ABB TU860 supports redundant power feeding. In normal operation, both supplies share the load; if one supply fails, the other automatically sustains all connected modules. This design eliminates a common single point of failure in control cabinets.
Rated for operation from -40°C to +70°C and certified for ATEX Zone 2 and Class I Division 2 locations, the ABB TU860 can be installed outdoors, in unheated shelters, or directly in oil/gas processing areas. Its G3 corrosive atmosphere rating further ensures long-term reliability in chemical plants and coastal installations.
The TU860 ABB Ethernet FCI Module Termination Unit may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Oil & gas upstream and midstream facilities – The ABB TU860 withstands extreme temperatures and corrosive atmospheres, making it suitable for wellhead control, pipeline valve stations, and gas processing skids where uptime is critical.
- Chemical and pharmaceutical batch reactors – Dual power and communication redundancy ensure that recipe execution and safety interlocks remain active even during module replacement or a single power supply failure
- Power generation substations and auxiliary systems – Installed in switchgear rooms or outdoor cabinets, the ABB TU860 connects protection relays and governor controls to the main DCS without derating in high-EMI environments.
- Water/wastewater treatment plants – The G3 corrosion rating and wide humidity tolerance allow the ABB TU860 to be placed near clarifiers, digester buildings, or lift stations where condensation and trace H₂S are present.
- No onboard firmware on the ABB TU860 – The ABB TU860 is a passive termination unit; it contains no processor or firmware. All communication logic resides in the CI845 or other FCI modules inserted into its slots.
- Firmware updates are performed on the CI845 module – To update the Ethernet fieldbus interface, you replace or flash the CI845 module using ABB's Control Builder or 800xA configuration tools. The ABB TU860 remains untouched during this process.
- Hardware revision compatibility – When ordering replacement ABB TU860 units, always verify the revision number against your existing stock. ABB may introduce minor layout changes that require corresponding ModuleBus terminators (TB807 variants).
- No field-upgradable components – The ABB TU860 does not support user-installed firmware, security patches, or feature upgrades. Any functional enhancement requires changing the inserted communication module, not the TU860 base.
- Extended temperature range – Certified for -40°C to +70°C ambient operation, the ABB TU860 can be deployed in arctic pipeline stations or desert solar farms without supplemental heating or air conditioning.
- Hazardous location readiness – With ATEX Zone 2 and Class I Division 2 certifications, the ABB TU860 may be installed in areas where flammable gases or vapors are present only under abnormal conditions (e.g., near tank vents or sampling points).
- High-humidity and condensing environments – Rated for 5–95% relative humidity non-condensing, the ABB TU860 performs reliably in unsealed enclosures, pump rooms, and coastal installations where daily temperature swings cause moisture.
- Corrosive gas resistance (G3) – The PCB and connector coatings meet ISA-S71.04 G3 severity levels, allowing the ABB TU860 to operate for years in paper mills, refinery process units, and fertilizer plants without creeping corrosion.
