More Information

Overview Manuals DH+ Routing Remote I/O Series E Migration Application
  • Assign each channel explicitly as DH+ or Remote I/O before reconnecting the network
  • Preserve routing tables, link IDs, node addresses, rack assignments and communication rates
  • Review Series E firmware and electronic keying when replacing an earlier module

1756-DHRIO is an Allen-Bradley ControlLogix DH+ and Remote I/O communication module.

Its two channels can be configured independently; DH+ supports messaging, while Remote I/O operation is scanner-only for digital and block-transfer data.

Confirm firmware, routing, keying, cable polarity, network termination and controller project compatibility before restoring communications.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1756-DHRIO are confirmed during quotation.

  • Preserve local and remote link IDs and controller message paths
  • Restore node addresses and channel communication rates
  • Remember that Channel A and the programming port are not isolated from each other
  • Configure 1756-DHRIO as a scanner, not as an adapter
  • Restore logical rack, starting-group and block-transfer assignments
  • Match Belden 9463 polarity, communication rate and network termination
  • Do not downgrade Series E firmware 7.x to version 6.x
  • Update EDS and controller-software support before installation
  • Handle electronic keying and routing-table restoration according to the network role
  • 1756-DHRIO Data Highway Plus messaging on either independently configured channel
  • 1756-DHRIO Remote I/O scanner operation with up to 32 logical racks and 16 block transfers per channel
  • Mixed service with one 1756-DHRIO channel assigned to DH+ and the other assigned to Remote I/O
Description
1756-DHRIO provides two channels that can be configured individually for Data Highway Plus or Remote I/O communication. Rockwell Automation specifies 57.6, 115.2, and 230.4 Kbps rates for the module.

1756-DHRIO supports DH+ messaging and Remote I/O scanner operation for installed legacy architectures. Each channel may carry different addressing, rack, scan, and cabling requirements that must be documented independently.

1756-DHRIO was officially discontinued by Rockwell Automation on December 31, 2024. Replacement planning must preserve both channel modes, node or rack data, controller project, block-transfer requirements, firmware, cable records, and the manufacturer engineering-replacement guidance.

Technical notes
1756-DHRIO is a two-channel ControlLogix DH+/RIO module whose Remote I/O function is scanner-only. Series E firmware 7.x is not backward-compatible with 6.x, so routing, keying and project compatibility must be reviewed.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can 1756-DHRIO operate as a Remote I/O adapter?
No. Rockwell Automation specifies 1756-DHRIO as a Remote I/O scanner only. Use hardware documented for the adapter role when a ControlLogix chassis must appear as an RIO adapter.
Can one 1756-DHRIO channel run DH+ while the other runs Remote I/O?
Yes. The two ports are independently selectable. Configure each channel's role and communication rate explicitly and document the cable and node or rack assignments before changing the module.
Can Series E firmware 7.x be downgraded to version 6.x to match an old spare?
No. Rockwell Automation states that Series E 7.x firmware is not backward-compatible with 6.x. Plan the replacement around the approved controller software, EDS files and routing configuration.
Can a Series E 1756-DHRIO replace an older Series B, C or D module?
It can be used as a replacement when the project and electronic keying are handled correctly. Preserve DH+ routing tables; for Remote I/O applications use compatible or disabled keying as directed by the official release information.
Why can a DH+ node appear online while messages still fail through 1756-DHRIO?
Check the module routing table, local and remote link IDs, destination node, controller message path and whether Channel A's programming port shares the expected path. A healthy physical link does not prove the inter-network route is correct.
Why can Remote I/O adapters disappear after replacing 1756-DHRIO?
Verify that the channel is configured as RIO scanner, the communication rate matches every adapter, rack sizes and starting groups are restored, Belden 9463 polarity is correct and both end terminations match the network design.
Is the local programming port isolated from both 1756-DHRIO network channels?
No. The official specifications state there is no isolation between Channel A and the programming port. Account for that relationship when troubleshooting grounds, cabling and service connections.
