More Information

Overview Manuals Network Design Capacity Chassis Fit Application
  • Two 10/100 Mbps copper ports support DLR and linear EtherNet/IP layouts
  • Provides controller messaging, distributed I/O, and integrated-motion connectivity
  • Combines high connection capacity with temporary USB local programming

1756-EN3TR is built for ControlLogix networks that need two embedded switch ports rather than an external switch at the chassis. The topology can continue as a line or close as a DLR ring.

Capacity planning should consider connections, packet rate, and motion traffic together. Chassis series also changes the permitted upper operating temperature, so mechanical fit alone is not sufficient.

Before commissioning, verify the chassis series, power budget, DLR supervisor, IP plan, firmware, electronic keying, cabling, and saved Studio 5000 module definition.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1756-EN3TR are confirmed during quotation.

  • Use both RJ45 ports for the engineered DLR or linear topology
  • Assign and document the intended DLR supervisor before commissioning
  • Preserve IP addressing and module-definition data during replacement
  • Plan within 128 TCP and 256 CIP connection limits
  • Evaluate the 25,000-packet-per-second module capacity against the application
  • Coordinate controller, update-rate, and network-load limits for integrated motion
  • Install 1756-EN3TR in any compatible ControlLogix chassis slot with an adequate power budget
  • Apply the documented 0 to 60°C operating-temperature range
  • Use the USB connection only for temporary local programming and maintenance
  • Device Level Ring EtherNet/IP control networks
  • Linear EtherNet/IP communication between ControlLogix and distributed devices
  • Integrated-motion architectures engineered for the documented axis capacity
Description
1756-EN3TR adds two 10/100 Mbps copper EtherNet/IP ports to a ControlLogix chassis for Device Level Ring or linear network topologies.

The module supports controller messaging, distributed I/O and integrated motion, with published limits of 128 TCP connections, 256 CIP connections, 25,000 packets per second and as many as 128 motion axes.

Installation planning must cover the DLR supervisor, IP configuration, firmware, electronic keying, chassis power, cabling, network load and the saved Studio 5000 module definition.

Technical notes
1756-EN3TR installation requires matching chassis series, firmware, electronic keying, IP plan, and DLR role; an incorrect module definition or duplicate address can stop EtherNet/IP communication.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can 1756-EN3TR join an existing Device Level Ring built with another module generation?
It can participate only when the ring design, firmware, DLR roles, update requirements, and Studio 5000 module definition are compatible. Verify the complete ring before inserting the module.
When should 1756-EN3TR be selected for a Device Level Ring?
Select it when the engineered EtherNet/IP architecture requires two copper ports and DLR participation. Confirm which device is the ring supervisor and retain the documented ring parameters.
Can the USB port on 1756-EN3TR remain connected for normal plant communication?
No. Rockwell Automation designates the USB port for temporary local programming and configuration. It is not a substitute for either EtherNet/IP network port.
Can the two 1756-EN3TR ports be assigned to unrelated plant networks?
No. They form the module's embedded EtherNet/IP switch for the engineered DLR or linear topology; they are not two independent network interfaces with separate IP configurations.
Can 1756-EN3TR be installed in any free ControlLogix slot?
The module can occupy any ControlLogix chassis slot, but the chassis series, operating-temperature limit, power budget, network cabling, and controller project must still satisfy the documented installation.
Why might a replacement 1756-EN3TR remain offline after cabling?
Check for a duplicate IP address, incorrect subnet or gateway, incompatible firmware or keying, a mismatched module definition, bad Ethernet cabling, or an incomplete DLR ring configuration.
Is 1756-EN3TR suitable for high-axis-count integrated motion?
Rockwell Automation documents integrated-motion capacity up to 128 axes, but actual design limits depend on the controller, update rates, network load, firmware, and complete motion architecture.
