Overview Manuals Processor & Base Match Expansion Limits Memory & Serial Protocols Applications
  • Install the processor only in a compatible MicroLogix 1500 base unit
  • Match processor Series and firmware before enabling Modbus, ASCII or expanded I/O features
  • Use LSP-compatible memory and real-time-clock accessories rather than LRP-only options

1764-LSP is an Allen-Bradley MicroLogix 1500 standard processor for compact machine-control systems.

It provides approximately 7 KB of user memory, uses the base-unit Channel 0 RS-232 path and supports 1769 Compact I/O expansion within published revision limits.

Before installation or replacement, verify processor and base-unit Series, FRN, RSLogix 500 version, memory accessory, communication driver and expansion-bank design.

Availability, condition, price, and shipping time for 1764-LSP are confirmed during quotation.

  • Pair the removable processor with the exact 1764 base-unit catalog number and Series
  • Keep Channel 0 wiring and protocol settings with the base-unit communication path
  • Do not substitute 1764-LRP when the project has not been checked for its second port and memory differences
  • Use the processor Series, base Series, FRN and RSLogix version to determine the 8- or 16-module limit
  • Use no more than one 1769 expansion cable and no more than two I/O banks
  • Fit the documented power supply and 1769-ECR or 1769-ECL end cap to the added bank
  • Use 1764-MM1, 1764-MM1RTC or 1764-RTC accessories for LSP backup and clock requirements
  • Configure DF1 or DH-485 according to the retained Channel 0 network design
  • Enable Modbus RTU slave or ASCII only on Series B and later 1764-LSP processors
  • Compact machine automation using a MicroLogix 1500 base and embedded I/O
  • Machine-control systems expanded with Bulletin 1769 Compact I/O banks
  • Serial integration with DF1, DH-485, and supported Series B or later Modbus or ASCII devices

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
When should 1764-LSP be selected instead of 1764-LRP?
Select 1764-LSP when the project fits its standard memory and single base-unit Channel 0 communication path. The LRP adds a second isolated processor communication channel and supports larger memory options, so an LRP project cannot be assumed to fit an LSP.
Can a failed 1764-LSP be replaced without disconnecting all field wiring?
The field terminals, embedded I/O and power connections remain on the 1764 base unit, but the replacement processor must match the installed base-unit series and project requirements. Isolate power, verify the processor seating and series, restore the approved program, and confirm I/O operation before returning the controller to service.
Can a larger 1764-MM2 or 1764-MM3 module increase the user memory of 1764-LSP?
No. A memory module stores or transfers application data; it does not expand the processor’s executable memory. The larger 1764-MM2 and 1764-MM3 modules are intended for 1764-LRP applications that exceed the LSP memory range, so they must not be treated as a memory upgrade for 1764-LSP.
Why can Compact I/O modules remain offline after replacing 1764-LSP?
Check that the downloaded project matches the physical I/O order and both expansion banks. Also verify the processor and base-unit series, operating-system FRN, expansion cable, bank power, end cap and RSLogix 500 compatibility; a mechanically correct processor replacement does not automatically validate the expansion
Why might Modbus RTU or ASCII options be unavailable on 1764-LSP?
These protocols require a Series B or later 1764-LSP and suitable operating-system and RSLogix 500 support. Confirm the processor nameplate series, firmware revision and Channel 0 driver configuration before concluding that the serial port is defective.
Can a used Series A 1764-LSP replace a Series C processor in a two-bank expansion system?
Not as a like-for-like replacement. The later processor and base revisions enable expansion features that the Series A processor does not provide. Match the installed series, FRN, RSLogix project and expansion-bank design.
Why can a replacement 1764-LSP become unreachable through Channel 0 after startup?
Check whether Channel 0 is using the downloaded user configuration or Default Communications mode, then verify the selected driver, baud rate, node address, protocol and cable. The processor may be healthy but inaccessible because its restored communication settings do not match the programming workstation.
