Features:
- Interface Between the ISA/EISA Bus and ControlNet Network
- Combines Capability of High-Speed ControlNet Communication with Multi-Module Rack Support
- Operates in Conjunction with PLC-5 Processors and ControlNet Field Devices
The Allen-Bradley 1784-KTCS ControlNet ISA-bus scanner card serves as the dedicated communication interface between industrial PCs and ControlNet networks, providing reliable deterministic data exchange for PLC-5 control systems. It continuously facilitates real-time I/O data transfer and peer-to-peer messaging between controllers at communication rates up to 5 Mbps, distributing control commands and status information across the network to support steady state operation of all connected devices and modules.
The 1784-KTCS provides essential communication functions common to the entire ControlNet infrastructure, and is a critical component of the control path, directly affecting the proper, normal operation of the overall PLC-5 system. Up to four 1784-KTCS cards are supported per computer depending on the desired communication capacity. The 1784-KTCS occupies only a single ISA or EISA slot in the host computer and is always installed in an available expansion slot position.
For expanded network applications, the 1784-KTCS system supports multiple 1784-KTCS scanner cards installed in the same host computer. In addition to standard single card operation, the multi-card configuration also performs distributed network load balancing. The 1784-KTCS multi-card configuration executes communication management using the internal bus interface specified in the card specifications.
The 1784-KTCS Allen-Bradley ControlNet ISA-bus scanner card may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

- Industrial Communication Bridging: Connects legacy computer systems directly to ControlNet networks. It enables a standard industrial PC to acts as a master controller, configuration terminal, or diagnostic tool.
- I/O Scanning & Control: Serves as an active ControlNet node capable of full I/O scanning, monitoring, and real-time data exchange with programmable logic controllers (PLCs), remote I/O blocks, and drive systems.
- Legacy System Support: Designed explicitly for 16-bit ISA and 32-bit EISA expansion bus slots. This makes it essential for maintaining, upgrading, or extracting data from vintage industrial workstations and HMIs that rely on legacy architecture.
- Multi-Module Scalability: Supports configurations of up to four cards per computer, allowing a single host terminal to scan and manage multiple independent networks simultaneously.
- Hardware Preparation: Ensure the host machine is completely powered off and disconnected. Always wear an anti-static grounding wrist strap to protect the electronic components from electrostatic discharge (ESD).
- Configuration Settings: Before slotting the card, verify memory addresses, I/O addresses, and interrupt levels (IRQs) using onboard switches or jumpers. Ensure these parameters do not conflict with existing hardware in the host PC.
- Physical Insertion: Insert the card firmly into an available 16-bit ISA or 32-bit EISA expansion slot and secure the mounting bracket to the chassis.
- Network Hookup: Connect the dual-port BNC connectors directly to the tap or trunk cable of the physical ControlNet architecture. If necessary, use the Network Access Port (NAP) via specialized interface cables for configuration terminal hookups.
- Driver & Software Dependencies: Requires software layers such as RSLinx or IOLinx to handle the configuration and communication routing between the PC operating system and the ControlNet hardware.
- Flashing Process: Firmware updates are usually bundled into specific patch tools. To upgrade the firmware, run the unzipped installation setup.exe package on a compatible operating system environment (typically legacy environments like Windows 2000/XP or NT 4.0 depending on the exact hardware series revision).
