  • Mount the chassis on a bonded conductive backpanel
  • Install one compatible SLC power supply on the chassis left side
  • Use the documented processor or I/O adapter position and slot plan
  • Calculate 5.1 V DC and 24 V DC load for every installed module
  • Keep demand within both chassis and selected power-supply limits
  • Recalculate the load whenever modules or communication adapters change
  • Maintain documented enclosure clearance and ventilation
  • Use correct grounding hardware and protective-earth bonding
  • Inspect backplane connectors, latches, mounting tabs, and chassis alignment
  • Material-handling machines using modular SLC 500 I/O
  • HVAC and building-service control panels retaining SLC 500
  • Small process and assembly systems requiring seven local module slots
Description
The Allen-Bradley 1746-A7 is a seven-slot modular chassis for SLC 500 processors, I/O adapters, power supplies, communication modules, and compatible 1746 I/O modules.

The Series B installation data gives panel-mount dimensions of 28.2 × 17.1 × 14.5 cm and an approximate empty weight of 1.1 kg. Maximum backplane current is 10 A at 5.1 V DC and 2.88 A at 24 V DC, subject to the installed power-supply and module load calculation.

Rockwell Automation marks 1746-A7 discontinued from March 31, 2024, with no planned replacement. Before sourcing a spare, verify chassis condition, series marking, grounding, cabinet clearance, power supply, module arrangement, and any multi-chassis interconnect cables.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Is a power supply included with Allen-Bradley 1746-A7?
Do not assume it is included. Allen-Bradley 1746-A7 is the seven-slot chassis; the compatible SLC power supply, processor or adapter, modules, filler plates, and interconnect cables are separate unless the stock description lists them.
Which device normally occupies the first slot of Allen-Bradley 1746-A7?
The leftmost chassis position is used by the SLC processor or an I/O adapter according to the system architecture. Check the controller and network design before moving modules between slots.
Can Allen-Bradley 1746-A7 be used in a multi-chassis SLC 500 system?
Yes, when the selected SLC processor and documented interconnect arrangement support it. Each chassis needs a matched power supply, and cable length, chassis numbering, grounding, and module addressing must be engineered.
Why should the series marking be recorded before replacing Allen-Bradley 1746-A7?
Series information affects the applicable installation and compliance documentation. Record the chassis and power-supply labels so grounding hardware, mounting guidance, and approvals can be checked against the installed revision.
Should unused slots in Allen-Bradley 1746-A7 be left open?
Use the documented SLC 500 filler module where required to protect the backplane and reduce contamination or accidental contact. Also keep the enclosure and ventilation arrangement within the installation instructions.
What cabinet checks matter before fitting Allen-Bradley 1746-A7?
Confirm mounting-hole spacing, door and wiring clearance, cable-bend radius, ventilation, conductive backpanel bonding, protective-earth connection, power-supply space, and access for removing modules and terminal blocks.
Is there a direct Rockwell Automation replacement for Allen-Bradley 1746-A7?
Rockwell Automation lists no planned factory replacement. Moving to a newer control platform changes processor, I/O, enclosure layout, wiring, software, communications, testing, and documentation and should be treated as a migration project.
