Overview Manuals Specifications Communication Application Scenarios Firmware

Features:

  • Combines Modbus Plus Master and Slave capabilities with support for peer communication, global data, broadcast commands, and all five routing levels.
  • Handles up to 4,000 words of backplane data and up to 200 Master commands, with configurable node addressing, polling, and event-driven writes.
  • Integrates into a single 1756 slot with dual DB9 Modbus Plus connectors, an RS-232 configuration interface, and status LEDs for communication and module diagnostics.
ProSoft MVI56-MBP provides a practical way to integrate ControlLogix automation with established Modbus Plus networks. Industrial facilities may contain Modicon processors alongside drives, relays, power monitoring equipment, and other devices that continue to communicate through Modbus Plus. The module creates a direct interface between such equipment and the ControlLogix backplane without requiring communication activity on both sides to operate synchronously. Processor memory is accessible through the module, while ladder logic manages data movement and configuration. The arrangement supports mixed automation environments where reliable exchange between different control platforms is required.

Network communication through ProSoft MVI56-MBP can be adapted to different control strategies using Master, Slave, and global data functions. Master operation provides conditional or continuous command polling and supports event-driven bit and register writes controlled through ladder logic. Slave operation allows other processors to read from or write to module memory and also accepts broadcast commands from the host. Global input and output data receive priority to provide a high-speed mechanism for exchanging control information. Communication error and status information can be returned to ladder logic to support application monitoring and troubleshooting.

ProSoft MVI56-MBP is also suited to industrial control cabinets where environmental and mechanical conditions require robust communication hardware. Operation is specified from 0 to 60°C with storage capability from -40 to 85°C and relative humidity up to 95% without condensation. Shock ratings reach 30 g during operation and 50 g when non-operational, while vibration resistance is rated at 5 g from 10 to 150 Hz. Dedicated LEDs allow maintenance personnel to observe module, backplane transfer, application, and serial activity status. Combined with local or remote rack installation, the module provides a flexible communication path for ControlLogix systems working with Modbus Plus equipment.

The MVI56-MBP ProSoft Modbus Plus Communication Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Description
ProSoft MVI56-MBP provides a communication interface between ControlLogix compatible processors and devices operating on Modbus Plus networks. The module occupies a single slot in a 1756 backplane and can be installed in either a local or remote rack. Recognized as an input/output module by the ControlLogix system, MVI56-MBP accesses processor memory for data exchange between the processor and the Modbus Plus network. Ladder logic handles data transfer and configuration, while backplane communication operates asynchronously from Modbus Plus network activity.

ProSoft MVI56-MBP supports both Master and Slave operation, allowing connection with Modicon processors and other Modbus Plus compatible equipment such as drives, relays, and power monitoring hardware. Two standard DB9 female connectors provide Modbus Plus network connections. The CFG port uses an RJ45 interface with RS-232 communication only, operating at a fixed 57,600 baud, no parity, and one stop bit. The unit is supplied with an RJ45 to DB-9M cable and a six-foot RS-232 configuration cable.

ProSoft MVI56-MBP provides user-definable memory and supports transfer of up to 4,000 registers across the ControlLogix backplane. Read and write transactions can contain up to 100 words, and all five levels of Modbus Plus routing are supported. Configurable parameters include node addresses from 1 to 64, global output data from 0 to 32 words, global input data from 0 to 32 words, module transfers from 0 to 4,000 words, and Master command lists containing up to 200 commands. Slave mode accepts function codes 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 15, and 16, while Master mode transmits function codes 3 and 16.

ProSoft MVI56-MBP also supports global data exchange, broadcast commands, conditional and continuous command polling, event-driven bit and register writes, and communication status reporting to ladder logic. Backplane current requirements are 800 mA at 5 VDC and 3 mA at 24 VDC. The module operates from 0 to 60°C and can be stored from -40 to 85°C, with 5% to 95% relative humidity under non-condensing conditions. Mechanical ratings include 30 g operational shock, 50 g non-operational shock, and 5 g vibration from 10 to 150 Hz, while LEDs indicate Module Status, Backplane Transfer Status, Application Status, and Serial Activity.
