Features:
- Executes S7-400 control logic from equal 1.4 MB code and data work-memory areas.
- Separates MPI/DP communication from a second PROFIBUS DP interface.
- Supports memory cards up to 64 MB for project storage and transfer.
The CPU 414-3 combines central program execution with multiple fieldbus routes inside one S7-400 rack module.
An IFM position extends the communication layout without replacing either of the two integrated bus interfaces.
CiR timing coordinates supported distributed-I/O configuration changes while the controller remains in RUN.
The Siemens 6ES7414-3XM05-0AB0 CPU 414-3 Central Processing Unit may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Project storage choices
- RAM Load Area: The CPU includes 512 KB of internal RAM load memory.
- Card Capacity: External memory cards can provide up to 64 MB of project storage.
- Flash Use: Flash cards retain a transportable project without battery-backed RAM.
- RAM Use: RAM cards provide writable load memory whose retention depends on backup power.
Assigning the two integrated buses
- First Interface: X1 can serve MPI communication or a PROFIBUS DP role.
- Second Interface: X2 provides a separate PROFIBUS DP connection.
- Engineering Access: MPI permits programming-device and operator communication with the CPU.
- Distributed I/O: The DP paths exchange cyclic data with configured field devices.
Updating supported I/O in RUN
- Change Scope: CiR applies to supported distributed-I/O configuration changes while the CPU remains in RUN.
- Base Interval: A 100 ms basic synchronization interval precedes the transferred change.
- I/O Contribution: The synchronization time increases by 15 µs for each affected I/O byte.
- Project Control: Only objects and changes permitted by the S7-400 CiR rules can use this process.
How instructions and data are handled
- Logic Operations: Bit, word, and fixed-point instructions follow the CPU's short execution path.
- Floating Point: Floating-point instructions use a longer processing interval than the other documented operation types.
- Code/Data Split: Program blocks and runtime data occupy separate 1.4 MB work areas.
- Retentive Data: Battery backup preserves the configured memory areas that require retention.
