Overview Manuals Applications Integration Operating Environment Standards

Features:

  • Adds Tricon I/O and communication-module capacity beyond the main chassis.
  • Provides dual connector sets for the triplicated A, B and C expansion buses.
  • Accepts the documented Tricon power-module options and keyed module slots.
The current configuration is the 8111 local I/O Expansion Chassis, distinct from the main and remote-expansion chassis models.

It extends the controller backplane through redundant triplicated serial paths while sharing the system's processor supervision.

A valid build requires correct chassis addressing, cable sets, power budget, grounding and permitted module placement.

Availability is subject to Apter Power inventory and sourcing confirmation.

  • Adds local I/O capacity to a Tricon safety system within the documented cable reach.
  • Houses additional analog, digital and communication modules for large projects.
  • Supports expansion during system retrofit while the main processor chassis remains unchanged.
  • The chassis must be mechanically secured with clearance for module insertion and cabinet airflow.
  • Triplicated expansion-bus cables connect channels A, B and C between the main and expansion backplanes.
  • Protective earth, logic power and the chassis address are completed before modules are commissioned.
  • Chassis power planning assumes the documented worst-case ambient condition of 60 °C.
  • Installed modules require a clean control enclosure with non-condensing humidity.
  • Cooling clearance must be maintained around densely populated racks and their power supplies.
  • The triplicated expansion backplane follows the documented Tricon I/O and communication-bus architecture.
  • Chassis construction and module keying are part of the approved Tricon system hardware arrangement.
  • System certification remains dependent on the complete installed controller configuration rather than the empty rack alone.
Description
Triconex 8111 is the standard expansion chassis used to extend a Tricon controller beyond the main chassis. Its backplane distributes logic power and the triplicated I/O bus to installed modules. The chassis extends local I/O through three RS-485 bus channels, with duplicated connector sets supporting the triplicated A, B and C paths.

Six RS-485 expansion-bus ports provide two connector sets for channels A, B and C. This arrangement carries voted I/O traffic between expansion hardware and the three main processors at the specified bus rate. Separate I/O and communication buses carry deterministic module traffic while two power positions allow a redundant chassis supply arrangement.

System design must account for cable-set type, chassis address, slot population, power-module capacity and communication-module placement. Grounding and airflow must be completed before any I/O module is energized. Hardware addressing, protective earth and cable-set selection establish the expansion position before any keyed I/O modules are installed.

Technical notes
8111 addressing, triplicated I/O-bus cabling and worst-case power loading must be verified before installed modules are energized.

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
What ordering detail identifies the intended configuration of 8111?
The 8111 designation identifies the local expansion chassis; the main and remote chassis use different catalog numbers.
Which companion hardware defines compatibility for 8111?
Verify the main-chassis generation, expansion-cable set, address plan, power modules and intended slot population.
Where does 8111 sit in the documented control architecture?
It increases available I/O and communication capacity while retaining the triplicated controller bus.
Who can verify condition and lead time for 8111?
Apter Power can review the rack identity and provide current condition, included-hardware and delivery information.
What must remain unchanged during an exchange of 8111?
Document every cable, address and module position, calculate worst-case power and perform chassis diagnostics after the change.
What information lets Apter Power quote 8111 accurately?
Provide the main-chassis model, cable distance, module list, power-source details, quantity and shipping location.
