Features:
- Switches sixteen 24 V DC loads through four isolated channel groups.
- Reports configurable output and field-circuit faults to the controller.
- Supports central S7-300 stations and compatible distributed ET 200M stations.
Separate group supplies let a machine builder divide actuator circuits without losing the common backplane command path.
A detected channel fault can be traced through the module indication and controller diagnostics before the field wiring is disturbed.
The 40-pole front connector keeps the outgoing conductors attached at the module boundary during cabinet service.
The Siemens 6ES7322-8BH10-0AB0 SM 322 Digital Output Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

How the output paths are organized
- Channel groups: Sixteen points are divided into four electrically isolated groups, so load circuits can be separated by cabinet section.
- Load switching: Each sourcing point delivers the commanded 24 V DC state to one field device within the documented current limit.
- Shared references: The four-channel grouping defines which outputs share supply and reference connections at the front connector.
- Field termination: A 40-pole removable connector forms the wiring boundary between the module and the actuators.
Using diagnostics during troubleshooting
- Load-voltage loss: Group-level monitoring can identify a missing external supply before individual actuators are investigated.
- Wire break: Configured channel diagnostics distinguish an open field circuit at either signal state.
- Diagnostic interrupt: The CPU can receive a fault event so the control program and maintenance system can respond.
- Channel indication: Red fault LEDs help relate the controller message to the physical output point.
Planning two-channel availability
- Paired control: Redundant operation lets two output paths contribute to one load strategy where the project supports it.
- Reference potential: Both paths must use the documented reference arrangement to avoid unintended equalizing current.
- Fault separation: Independent diagnostics make it easier to identify which path caused a discrepancy.
- Commissioning test: Each path should be tested separately before the redundant output is released to service.
Integrating the module in distributed I/O
- Interface module: The selected IM 153 version must support the SM 322 diagnostics and operating mode required by the project.
- Hardware catalog: The exact order number and module parameters must be entered in the STEP 7 station configuration.
- Address mapping: The assigned output bytes must match the control program and the physical slot sequence.
- Start-up check: External 24 V supplies, front-connector wiring and diagnostic behavior should be verified before enabling loads.
