Features:
- The FM 357-2 controls as many as four rotary or linear positioning axes.
- Analog servo, stepper and SIMODRIVE 611-U drive paths are supported by the documented hardware.
- Local processing keeps position control and interpolation inside the function module.
The S7-300 CPU exchanges commands and status with the FM while the module calculates the axis movement.
Encoder feedback returns through four measuring circuits so each configured axis can report actual position.
Backplane communication, field supply and drive cabling form separate paths that must all be present for operation.
The Siemens 6ES7357-4AH01-0AE0 FM 357-2 Positioning Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Separating trajectory calculation from the PLC scan
- Local processor: The M80486 executes the position-control and interpolation tasks inside the FM.
- Axis count: Up to four rotary or linear axes can be configured for independent or coordinated movement.
- PLC exchange: The S7-300 CPU supplies commands and receives motion status through the backplane interface.
- Cycle timing: Position control and interpolation run on their documented local cycles rather than the PLC scan.
Matching command and feedback hardware per axis
- Analog servo: The analog command path controls a compatible servo drive while an encoder returns actual position.
- Stepper control: Pulse and direction outputs command a configured stepper drive.
- Digital drive: SIMODRIVE 611-U uses the documented digital drive connection for its axis data.
- Feedback circuits: Four measuring circuits accept the position feedback assigned to the configured axes.
Keeping motion data in the function module
- User memory: Nonvolatile module memory stores the configured machine and motion data.
- CPU interface: PLC blocks exchange orders, parameters and status with the FM through the S7-300 backplane.
- Local execution: The FM processes axis commands without moving each interpolation step through the central CPU.
- Data check: Hardware configuration and module data must identify the exact FM 357-2 order number.
Tracing module, drive and feedback conditions
- Front indicators: LEDs provide a first separation between module state and active fault conditions.
- Axis status: Commissioning data identifies whether a problem belongs to an axis, drive or encoder path.
- Supply paths: Backplane communication and the external 24 V field supply should be checked independently.
- Startup load: The external source must accommodate the specified startup current as well as steady operation.
