Overview Manuals DH-485 Wiring Isolation Boundary Power & Cable Paths Product Applications

Features:

  • 1500 V DC isolation: separates the DH-485 trunk from attached equipment
  • Six-position network block: provides removable daisy-chain wiring
  • Series-aware labeling: requires terminal-number matching during service
1747-AIC protects and connects one node on an SLC 500 DH-485 network.

Its value lies in the isolation boundary and repeatable removable-terminal wiring rather than protocol conversion.

Series-dependent labeling makes the physical terminal map the safest reference during replacement.
Apter Power can review 1747-AIC Series, terminal map, cable selection, official records, condition, and quotation needs.

  • Terminal numbers: preserve the six-position connector map across Series changes
  • Daisy-chain path: keep the trunk continuous through each link coupler
  • End-node treatment: apply the documented termination only at the network boundaries
  • Protected sides: distinguish the DH-485 cable from processor and peripheral connections
  • Shield ground: bond the trunk at one approved point to avoid circulating current
  • Cable separation: maintain the official clearance from power wiring and noise sources
  • Processor connection: use the documented 1747-C11 path for an SLC node
  • Peripheral connection: choose 1747-C10 or 1747-C20 for the approved distance
  • External power: provide 24 V DC when the connected device or cable does not supply the coupler
  • SLC processor node: connect a controller to an installed DH-485 trunk
  • Programming access: isolate a supported interface or terminal from the network cable
  • Longer peripheral link: extend an approved DH-485 connection beyond a direct short cable
Description
Electrical isolation is added to an SLC 500 DH-485 node by 1747-AIC. The coupler presents a removable six-position terminal block for the shielded network cable and a processor/peripheral connection on the isolated side.

Rockwell Automation documents 1500 V DC isolation for 1747-AIC between the DH-485 cable and attached SLC or peripheral equipment. A daisy-chained trunk can extend to 1219 m and connect as many as 32 devices when the approved cable, grounding, and node plan are followed.

Series identification is important when wiring 1747-AIC: Series A and Series B use the same internal circuitry but their DATA A and DATA B labels differ. Terminal numbers, the correct 1747-C10/C11/C20 cable, a single shield-ground point, and the actual 24 V DC source should guide replacement work.

Technical notes
1747-AIC Series A reverses the printed DATA A and DATA B names relative to Series B even though the internal circuit is unchanged. Rewire by terminal number, not signal label, or the DH-485 pair can be crossed; retain the Series record and the existing six-position connector map before disconnection.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Why can a Series change make 1747-AIC wiring appear reversed?
Series A printed DATA A and DATA B differently from Series B. Use terminal numbers and the official cable diagram; the internal circuitry itself does not require a different network pair.
When does 1747-AIC need an external 24 V DC supply?
It needs external power when neither the processor nor peripheral connection supplies the coupler through the selected cable. Confirm the actual cable path before adding another source.
What usually causes a new 1747-AIC node to disturb the whole DH-485 trunk?
A reversed pair, incorrect shield/common connection, star branch, or added end termination can affect every token-passing device. Restore the daisy chain and inspect the six-position block first.
How does 1747-AIC protect attached equipment?
It provides the documented 1500 V DC isolation boundary between the communication cable and the connected SLC or peripheral side. It does not replace correct grounding or surge-control design.
Which cable should be specified with 1747-AIC for an SLC processor connection?
The official processor-to-coupler path uses 1747-C11. Peripheral interfaces use different documented cables, so the connected device and distance must be stated in the purchase request.
Can 1747-AIC create an additional DH-485 network segment by itself?
No. It is an isolated node coupler within the daisy-chained network, not a repeater that resets distance or node limits. The complete trunk remains subject to the published design boundary.
