More Information

Overview Manuals Network Architecture Fiber Interface Power & Environment Applications & Limits

Features:

  • Fieldbus bridge: Connects baseplate-mounted I/A Series Fieldbus Modules to a control station over fiber.
  • Protocol conversion: Translates the 2 Mbps module Fieldbus to a 10 Mbps fiber-optic trunk and back.
  • Network reach: Supports distances up to 2 km through the documented compatible hub architecture.
FCM10Ef extends an I/A Series FBM grouping over fiber while maintaining the control-station communication path.

The module uses multimode fiber with ST connections and reports operating and traffic states through six front indicators.

Integration planning covers the control station, hub, redundancy arrangement, baseplate power, enclosure and fiber route.

Apter Power provides documentation, quotation and procurement support for the Invensys FCM10Ef I/A Series Fiber-Optic Fieldbus Communications Module.

Important Notice: Other accessories, manuals, cables, calibration data, software, etc. are not included with this equipment unless listed in the above stock item description. All prices are shown in USD.
  • Control-station connection: FCM10Ef works with supported multiport fiber-optic converters or hubs on an optionally redundant 10 Mbps trunk Fieldbus.
  • Group capacity: Up to six groupings of FCM10Ef modules and FBMs can be connected through the hub architecture.
  • FBM capacity: A control station can support up to 120 FBMs, with the practical total governed by selected scan periods.
  • Redundancy: One FCM10Ef serves a non-redundant grouping; a redundant grouping requires a pair.
  • Recommended cable: Customer-supplied 62.5/125 µm graded-index multimode glass fiber with 0.275 numerical aperture.
  • Termination: The module uses ST-type fiber connectors, and duplex cable is recommended.
  • Loss budget: Maximum allowable cable loss is 1 dB/km at 1300 nm and 3.6 dB/km at 850 nm.
  • Redundant routing: A redundant installation uses four fibers: two transmit and two receive paths.
  • Input supply: 24 V dc, +5%/-10%, supplied through the I/A Series baseplate.
  • Consumption: Maximum power use and heat dissipation are both 7 W.
  • Operating range: -20°C to +70°C with 5% to 95% noncondensing relative humidity.
  • Installation environment: The specification covers ISA Class G3 contamination, pollution degree 2 and mounting through the supported baseplate arrangement.
  • Distributed FBM networks: FCM10Ef is used when remote Fieldbus Module groups must connect to an I/A Series control station across a fiber link.
  • Fiber advantages: The link supports long runs and helps avoid electrical ground-loop, lightning and electromagnetic-interference paths between locations.
  • System boundary: FCM10Ef is not a general-purpose Ethernet switch; it belongs in the documented I/A Series Fieldbus architecture.
  • Approval boundary: Division 2, Zone 2 and CE/ATEX claims depend on the listed enclosure system, connected processor, certificate and site conditions.
Description
FCM10Ef is the I/A Series Fieldbus Communications Module that bridges baseplate-mounted Fieldbus Modules to a control station over fiber. It converts the 2 Mbps FBM Fieldbus to a 10 Mbps fiber-optic trunk and translates return traffic back to the module bus.

The documented architecture supports links of up to 2 km through compatible multiport fiber hubs. One module serves a non-redundant FBM grouping, while a redundant grouping uses a pair; six front LEDs assist with operation and traffic checks.

FCM10Ef belongs to the Foxboro I/A Series Fieldbus architecture rather than general-purpose Ethernet. Replacement planning should confirm the control station, hub, redundancy plan, multimode fiber, ST connectors, baseplate power and enclosure requirements.

Technical notes
FCM10Ef is a legacy I/A Series fiber-optic communications module documented in PSS 21H-2Y2 B3. Network capacity depends on scan periods, and hazardous-area use depends on the listed enclosure, connected processor, exact certificate and B0400FA conditions.

FAQS

The following is a list of questions commonly asked by our customers. Please contact us if you have a question about our process that is not answered below.
Can FCM10Ef be treated as a direct replacement for FCM10E?
No direct interchangeability should be assumed. Confirm the installed baseplate, converter or hub, fiber cabling and I/A Series architecture before approving any substitution.
Does an FCM10Ef installation need one module or a pair?
One module serves a non-redundant FBM grouping. A redundant grouping uses a matched pair of FCM10Ef modules connected through the supported hub architecture.
How far can FCM10Ef transmit between the module and the fiber-optic hub?
The OEM specification allows up to 2 km between FCM10Ef and the hub, provided the recommended cable and total optical-loss limits are met.
What fiber and connector should be specified for FCM10Ef?
Specify customer-supplied 62.5/125 µm graded-index multimode glass fiber with 0.275 numerical aperture and ST connectors. A duplex cable is recommended.
Can a different fiber type be used if it is already installed on site?
Not without engineering review. The OEM document states that cables with different characteristics may not be used, so confirm attenuation, numerical aperture and connector details before reuse.
What must be checked before using FCM10Ef in a Division 2 or Zone 2 location?
Verify the listed enclosure-based system, connected processor, exact certificate, subsystem guide B0400FA and site conditions. The module marking alone is not a blanket installation approval.
Does FCM10Ef require periodic calibration?
No. The OEM specification lists calibration as not required.
What should maintenance check first if FCM10Ef communications become intermittent?
Compare the six status LEDs, verify the 24 V dc supply, ST connector condition, transmit/receive routing, hub pairing and the fiber loss path before condemning the module.
