Features:
- Each encoder channel can be enabled separately.
- Diagnostic interrupts can be enabled during parameter assignment.
- The digital-input states have separate green status indicators.
The input data of 6ES7338-4BC01-0AB0 places the three channel values at separate double-word offsets. This arrangement keeps the encoder values distinct even when one trigger is assigned to several channels.
A standard-mode value on 6ES7338-4BC01-0AB0 carries its freeze indication in the highest bit. The position field and capture indication therefore have different meanings within the same returned double word.
Fast mode changes the checkback layout of 6ES7338-4BC01-0AB0 to include readiness, parameter-error and group-fault information. A program reading that mode must use the corresponding data layout.
The Siemens 6ES7338-4BC01-0AB0 SM 338 SSI Position Decoder Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Keep the encoder reference and cable shield distinct
- Ground reference: The encoder supply ground is connected to CPU ground; terminal M needs a low-impedance connection to that reference.
- Differential pairs: SSI clock and data use separate twisted pairs rather than a shared single-ended signal wire.
- Cable shield: The encoder cable shield is applied at both ends using the specified shielding arrangement.
- Supply conductors: The encoder supply terminals and the differential signal terminals perform separate wiring functions.
Apply acquisition settings through the CPU configuration
- Engineering state: Module parameters are assigned with the CPU in STOP.
- Transfer point: The CPU transfers the configured parameters to the module during the STOP-to-RUN transition.
- Runtime access: The user program does not change these module parameters during operation.
- Channel selection: An encoder input configured as absent is switched off instead of being interpreted as an active encoder.
Separate fault indication from an interrupt request
- SF indicator: The red group-fault indicator reports module faults and also lights during the startup self-test.
- Diagnostic records: Diagnostic information is generated independently of whether diagnostic interrupts have been enabled.
- CPU notification: With interrupts enabled, an arriving or departing diagnostic event calls OB82 in the CPU.
- Program evaluation: The diagnostic data can be read from the interrupt program using the supported system functions.
Preserve the version conditions of fast acquisition
- Feature threshold: Fast mode requires SM 338 firmware V2.0.0 or later and STEP 7 V5.3 SP2 or later.
- Update route: Firmware updating is performed through the hardware configuration environment.
- Distributed station: An update in a distributed installation requires the interface module to support the necessary system services.
- Interrupted update: A disrupted update leaves the module nonfunctional until firmware has been transferred successfully.
