Features:
- The CP 342-5 connects an S7-300 station to one electrical PROFIBUS DP segment.
- The processor supports DP, S7, PG/OP, open and S5-compatible communication services.
- A single-width rack format combines backplane access with a separate 24 V DC power connection.
The processor places PROFIBUS communication work outside the CPU while exchanging configured data through the S7-300 backplane.
DP master and DP device modes determine whether the module coordinates remote stations or exposes transfer areas to another master.
Connection resources are shared across DP, S7 and open communication, so the selected network role defines the available multi-protocol capacity.
The Siemens 6GK7342-5DA03-0XE0 CP 342-5 Communication Processor may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Master and device operation
- DP master: The processor coordinates configured field devices and maps their data into the S7 station.
- DP device: The processor can instead present defined input and output areas to another DP master.
- Bus connection: A 9-pin Sub-D RS485 socket provides the electrical PROFIBUS interface.
- Baud range: The interface supports the documented PROFIBUS rates through 12 Mbit/s.
Communication resource sharing
- S7 services: S7 communication exchanges controller data through configured connections.
- PG/OP access: Programming devices and operator panels use the supported service path.
- Open communication: SEND/RECEIVE jobs use dedicated connection and payload limits.
- Mixed operation: Active-connection capacity changes when DP and other protocols operate together.
Rack and external supplies
- Backplane path: The S7-300 rack supplies 5 V DC to the module electronics.
- External path: A four-pole terminal block accepts the 24 V DC field supply.
- Dual-source structure: Both sources are part of the operating power arrangement.
- Rack position: The compact processor occupies one S7-300 module width.
Configuration boundaries
- Engineering tools: The processor is configured with the supported STEP 7 or TIA Portal release.
- CPU allocation: Up to four CP 342-5 units can be assigned to one CPU.
- DP capacity: A master configuration can address up to 124 DP devices.
- Payload mapping: Per-device and total address limits govern how DP data is allocated.
