Features:
- Eight isolated analog channels accept voltage, current or thermocouple signals.
- Selectable integration relates conversion time to interference-frequency suppression.
- Diagnostic, hardware and limit-value alarms report configured channel conditions.
The SM 431 converts field measurements into signed S7-400 process values instead of passing raw sensor levels to the CPU.
Thermocouple channels combine characteristic linearization with an internal, external or dynamic reference-temperature path.
Channel-to-channel and backplane isolation separate the measurement points from the rack communication circuit.
The Siemens 6ES7431-7KF00-0AB0 S7-400 SM 431 Analog Input Module may still be available for purchase and support from Apter Power beyond End-Of-Life (EOL) by the manufacturer (OEM).

Assigning a measuring method to each channel
- Voltage paths: Each selected voltage range defines the electrical span converted into the channel word.
- Current paths: Current transmitters use the configured bipolar, 0–20 mA or 4–20 mA range.
- Thermocouple paths: Supported thermocouple types are linearized after their measured voltage is acquired.
- Range protection: The documented destruction limits apply to the physical input before software scaling.
Turning thermocouple voltage into temperature data
- Cold junction: The reference temperature can come from the internal sensor, an external compensation socket or a dynamic value.
- Linearization: The selected thermocouple curve converts the compensated millivolt signal into a temperature result.
- Channel assignment: Thermocouple type and compensation method are configured for the channel that receives the sensor.
- Wiring reach: Shielded field cable remains within the documented maximum path length.
Balancing channel update and mains rejection
- Integration setting: The configured integration interval sets the corresponding interference-suppression frequency.
- Update interval: A shorter basic conversion time refreshes a channel sooner than the longer rejection settings.
- Resolution: The converted channel value uses as many as sixteen bits including its sign.
- Engineering choice: Timing is selected from the required update rate and the dominant interference frequency.
Separating measurement status from rack communication
- Diagnostic alarm: A parameterized module or input condition can request a diagnostic interrupt.
- Limit alarm: Configured upper or lower boundaries can produce a limit-value event.
- Hardware interrupt: The controller receives the enabled process event through the backplane.
- Electrical separation: Channels are isolated from each other and from the S7-400 bus circuit.
